Faith: The Gift That Attaches Us to God’s Plan

The Faith That Serves

Life doesn’t always go as planned. Whether it’s our own bad decisions and mistakes, the self-destructive paths of loved ones, or global economic forces, we constantly face dashed plans and unrealized expectations. This tension is nothing new; Jesus’ first disciples wrestled with it, too.

When Jesus gave them the challenging command to forgive a repenting offender up to seven times a day, their immediate response was to ask for more faith. Were they seeking a greater ability to control the world around them—to heal, to influence evil, or to make life go according to their plan? The ensuing parable of the master and the slave, which may cringe our modern sensibilities, was a clear lesson for them: the slave has a job to do and doesn’t get what they want.

What is the function of faith?

  • Faith is a gift which empowers us to do God’s will and serve God and others.
  • It moves us beyond our self-centered expectations.
  • It attaches us to God’s plan—the plan of salvation for the whole world.

Like the Apostle Paul encouraged Timothy to rely on the “mustard seed of faith” already gifted to him, we are called to receive that gift gratefully. God has already done the impossible, taking the role of a servant to heal us, guard us, and assure us of eternal life. Let us, therefore, offer our faith back to God in worship and lives of humble service.

Call to Action: Offer Your Faith Back to God

Let us gratefully receive the mustard seed of faith gifted to us and, relying not on our own circumstances or outcomes, offer it back to God. Commit today to living a life of service, joining in God’s mission, and trusting His plan rather than trying to force your own.
