The Gospel today, the parable of the dishonest steward, isn’t a simple story with a clear moral. The steward, who’s been dishonest, is commended by his master for his shrewdness in worldly matters. This is a lesson for us: Jesus encourages his followers to be shrewd, discerning, and wise in spiritual matters. This is especially important in light of Luke’s gospel and the book of Acts, which emphasize wealth, poverty, and stewardship. We can start this journey of faithfulness with small steps and little actions, not for our own improvement, but from a kingdom-centered attitude inspired by Jesus and the saints.
