As I offer my final sermon as your priest-in-charge, my heart is filled with gratitude for the last five and three-quarter years of ministry at St. Barnabas and the beautiful retirement celebration we shared. On this final Sunday of the liturgical year, we turn our hearts toward Christ the King, contrasting earthly power with divine mercy.
Redefining Kingship
While Hebrew scriptures outline the military and judicial responsibilities of a king, history shows us that human leaders often fall short of the ideal. However, Jesus reveals the true nature of kingship:
- The Image of God: He is the firstborn of all creation, holding all things together.
- A Servant Leader: Unlike earthly rulers who may exploit, Jesus makes peace through the blood of His cross.
- Ultimate Mercy: Even while suffering crucifixion, He intercedes for His tormentors, asking the Father to forgive them.
A Kingdom of Connection
Jesus reaches out to those at the very end of their rope, proving that no one is beyond the reach of God’s mercy. We see this clearly when the criminal Dismas asks to be remembered, and Jesus promises him paradise “today”. This Kingdom is not a distant future event; it dawns here and now, inviting us into relationship and forgiveness regardless of our past.
Call to Action: Joyfully share in the inheritance of the saints
On this my final Sunday at St. Barnabas, I pray, as did the author of the Letter to the Colossians, that you are made strong with His glorious power. Endure everything with patience and joyfully give thanks to the Father, who has rescued us from darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of His beloved Son, where we find redemption and forgiveness.
