Christian Mission
Today’s Gospel, though specific in its details, provides a powerful illustration of our identity as Christians and as a church. We are constantly “being sent”, just as the Lord appointed seventy others to go ahead of him. This expansion from the original twelve to seventy signifies a mission to all nations.
The Call to Go Forth
- The “harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few”. This urgency reminds us not to become complacent, even two thousand years later.
- We are urged to “pray that the Lord of the harvest sends labourers” , incorporating this intention into our daily prayers.
- We are sent out “like lambs into the midst of wolves” , highlighting our vulnerability and dependence on God’s provision. We are to carry “no purse, no bag, no sandals” , trusting in Him.
Our Mission and True Rejoicing
Our mission is clear: we will “find people of peace, offer healing, [and proclaim that] the kingdom of God has come near”. While we may see signs of God’s work, we are reminded not to focus on outcomes. Instead, we are to “rejoice that your names are written in heaven”. As we prepare to be fed at the Lord’s table today, let us offer ourselves and go forth to love and serve God.
