Trust God’s Hand: Enduring Loss Unveils Our Souls

The Unveiling Word: Trust in God’s Providence

Today’s gospel passage presents us with a vitally important word: a word of warning, of opportunity, and of promise that can expose the inner workings of our minds, hearts, and souls. Spoken by Jesus from an apocalyptic perspective—which literally means “to unveil” or “reveal its true form and colours”—this passage prophesied the destruction of the enormous Temple in Jerusalem, the spiritual, cultural, and economic centre of the city. While we don’t need to imagine that historical event, our task is to recognize the great need for unveiling in our own lives.

  • Loss and Change as Revelation: External events, especially loss and change—like losing a job, a loved one, or our spiritual community—are a reliable source of this unveiling, devastating us but also revealing what is true about ourselves. As I prepare to leave St. Barnabas, I face this loss and change myself, needing to find a new community of faith.
  • The Warning Against Distraction: In such times, many will seek answers outside of themselves, but Jesus gives a stern warning: “Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name… Do not go after them”.
  • The Call to Trust: Instead, what Jesus would have us do is to trust in God’s providential hand. The earliest disciples watched Jesus himself face destruction, dying on the cross while trusting in God’s hand. We open ourselves to the gift of greater faith and trust by spending time in prayer, frequently receiving the Blessed Sacrament, breaking open sacred scripture, and offering ourselves in service. Jesus tells us that by such endurance, we will gain our souls.

Call to Action: Open Yourself to God’s Gift

Open yourself to a gift of greater faith and trust by committing to regular prayer and contemplation, receiving the Blessed Sacrament often, studying sacred scripture, and offering yourself in service to others, even when it is difficult. Put your trust in Jesus.
