Jesus is presented two events that prompt reflection on why bad things happen. Jesus’ response to these events is a call to repentance rather than assigning blame. Jesus follows up with a parable of a barren fig tree and the gardener’s intervention in an effort to get the tree to bear fruit. Perhaps unwanted events in our lives are means by which we are prompted to greater faithfulness.

One of the great truths of the painting is the truth at the heart of human experience. It is God who makes himself known! God seizes the initiative, reveals himself and we, by grace, encounter him.

Christians down through the ages, when the world around them was in tumult, follow the example of Jesus’, of the disciples, and of the saints who have gone before. They chose to build a community with love as its core value, caring not just for themselves but for their neighbour, the stranger, even their enemy.
